He grew up in the southern part of California and was a student at Huntington Beach High School, where he was a top player on both the football and basketball teams. Gonzalez continued to be a star in both sports at the University of California, Berkeley. He was instrumental in leading the football team to the 1996 Aloha Bowl. There, he set a school record for receiving nine receptions and tied it. Gonzalez later led the basketball team to Sweet 16 in the NCAA basketball tournament just a few months after. After graduating from high school Gonzalez was selected in the 1997 NFL Draft. Gonzalez was chosen as the 13th overall choice by the Kansas City Chiefs. Gonzalez was a player with the Chiefs from 1997 until the year 2008. Gonzalez was transferred to the Atlanta Falcons. After Gonzalez's first NFL season, he threw more than 59 passes every season.
